Maria Teresa Ibanez, 80, of Palmyra, passed away on May 24, 2022 at home surrounded by her family. She was born January 2, 1942, in Monteria, Colombia, daughter of the late Elis and Candelaria Gonzalez. She had worked as a Nurse's Aid for the Middletown Home and was an active member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church as well as a volunteer at the Hershey Public Library and Palmyra Food Bank. Maria is survived by her husband, Evaristo Ibanez; daughters, Angela P. Reigel (Chad) and Luz "Lucy" Elena Hamilton (Chris); grandchildren, Delaney Elizabeth Reigel, Chandler Michael Reigel and Keenan Michael (Madeline) Reigel, Liam Robert Hamilton, Luke Christopher Hamilton and Lance Matthew Hamilton and cousin, Alba Delgado. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 28, 2022, at 11AM in St. Joan of Arc Church, 359 West Areba Ave., Hershey. The family will begin receiving guests at 10:30AM. John L. Albanese, 90, of Hershey, passed away on May 11, 2022. John was born in Steelton on August 21, 1931; the son of the late John Albaneze and Anna Plut Albaneze. John was married to his loving wife, Annarose Gustin Albanese, for 47 years prior to her passing in April 2005. John retired as a network manager with the 7th Signal Command Communications Division with the Department of Defense at Fort Ritchie, MD and was also employed at the former Olmstead Air Force Base. For nearly 20 years John drove the 140-mile round trip between his home in Hershey and Fort Ritchie, MD. John also worked for CACI and as a contractor for the Hershey Company. John was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran, serving with the 101st Airborne Division, the "Screaming Eagles," seeing significant front line combat activity and received numerous commendations for valor. John was a graduate of Harrisburg Catholic "Class of 1949" and the former Hershey Junior College. In grade school John was a campanologist "bell ringer" for the former St. Peter's Parish across the street in Steelton, dutifully ringing the church bells every day at 7am and 6pm. He was an avid Penn State Football fan, followed football and basketball, and was an admirer and visitor to many U.S. National Parks. John was a key contributor on the St. Peter's Parish Basketball team which won a regional championship in Jersey City, NJ. As a do-it-all craftsman, John personally built his home and regularly applied his talents assisting friends and family with repairs and upgrades. John is survived by his children: daughter Therese Bretz (Jim) of suburban Harrisburg; sons John (Robin) of Lafayette Hill, PA and Salida, CO, Robert of Hershey, whom he lived with, and David (Melissa) of Pasadena, MD. Grandchildren Stuart Bretz (Krista), Gregory Bretz, Benjamin Bretz, Marielle Albanese Czabaranek (Stephen), Michaela Albanese, Kaitlyn Albanese, and John Albanese. Great granddaughter Sloane Bretz. Sisters Helen Donato and Bernadette Jones and Brother-in- Law Robert Gustin. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 16, 2022, in St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, 359 West Areba Avenue in Hershey with Rev. Alfred Sceski, Pastor, Celebrant. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery at the conclusion of Mass. A viewing will be held on Monday, May 16, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM in Wiedeman Funeral Home, 357 South Harrisburg Street, Oberlin, Steelton, PA 17113. Helen A. Koslosky, 89, of Hershey, passed away on May 5, 2022, in Country Meadows of Hershey. She was born September 2, 1932, in Wilkes Barre, daughter of the late George and Sophia (Grochalska) Halka. She had worked as a registered nurse and was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Helen is survived by; son, Robert Koslosky of Alexandria, VA and daughter, Kathryn Koslosky of Narberth, PA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Dr. Francis V. Koslosky, daughter, Theresa McLaughlin, and son, Michael L. Koslosky. A visitation will be held in St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 359 West Areba Ave., Hershey on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, beginning at 1:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 1:30 PM. Patricia A. Hooker, 90, of Traditions of Hershey in Palmyra PA and formerly of Richmond VA, passed away on April 23, 2022. She was born Jan. 24, 1932 in Harrisburg, the daughter of the late Henry and Barbara (Shenk) Hare. Patricia is survived by: daughters Barbara (Mike) Seiders and Carol Prosser; sons Carl and Michael (Tami) Hostetter; step-children Darlene (Charles) Madsen-Martin and Don Hooker; 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband James E. Hooker and a grandchild.
A visitation will be held from 11am until Noon followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Thur. May 5 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 359 West Areba Ave. Hershey. She was born May 11, 1940 in Hummelstown, a daughter of the late Thomas H. McCurdy and the late Laura (DiSantis) Wagner.
Rosemary had been employed as a service manager at Hoffman Ford and Hartman Toyota. In her later years she had been bartending at the Rutherford Amvets and Hummelstown VFW. She was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Hershey, Hershey VFW and the Hershey American Legion Auxillary's. She is survived by her 4 children, Deborah O'Donnell-White of Maryland, Renee Rumberger of Mechanicsburg, John F (Melissa) Scott of Hershey and Kerrin M (Randy) Lutz of Hummelstown; her companion of 36 years, Donald J. Hopple of Hummelstown, sister, Veronica Miller of Harrisburg, brother, Thomas H. McCurdy, Jr. of FL; 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter and infant great grandson. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 3rd from 10:30am - 11:30am immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 359 West Areba Ave., Hershey. Share condolences with the family at www.hooverfuneralhome.com. Dr. Rodrigue Mortel, 88, of Hershey, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Friday, April 22, 2022. He was born on December 3, 1933 in St. Marc, Haiti. After graduating from medical school in Haiti, Dr. Mortel received training in obstetrics and gynecology at Hahnemann Medical College and in gynecologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. During his 30-year tenure at the Penn State College of Medicine, he became full Professor and in 1982, became the first black foreign educated doctor to chair one of the 126 United States medical schools Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He occupied that position for 13 years. In 1995, he was promoted to Associate Dean and founding Director of the Penn State University Cancer Center. Before he retired from medicine, Dr. Mortel studied at St. Mary's Seminary University in Baltimore and was ordained a permanent deacon for the Catholic Church in 2001. He also served as the Director of the Missions Office for the Archdiocese of Baltimore and deacon at St. Joan of Arc parish in Hershey and his hometown parish in St. Marc, Haiti. In 1997, he created the Mortel Family Charitable Foundation which is now known as the Mortel High Hopes for Haiti Foundation to serve the poorest of the poor in Haiti. The Foundation currently operates numerous schools that serve over 1,500 children and adults. Dr. Mortel published three books, 135 articles and chapters in books as well as editorials in various periodicals including The New York Times and The Washington Post. For his numerous achievements, Dr. Mortel received many awards and occupied leadership positions in all prestigious obstetrical and gynecological societies in this country. He received the United States Public Health Service Award in 1970, the prestigious Horatio Alger Award in 1985 (From Rags to Riches), and the highly coveted Faculty Scholar Medal from the Pennsylvania State University for outstanding achievement in the area of health sciences in 1986. He was the creator and founding Chairman of the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF) and became, in 1994, the first foreigner to be President of the elite American Society of Gynecologic Oncologists (SGO). In 2013, the Penn State University College of Medicine named one of its four learning communities the Mortel Society and in 2015, Dr. Mortel received the Penn State Alumni Association's Honorary Alumnus Award. Surviving are his loving wife of 50 years, Cecilia (Shahhein) Mortel and their two children, Denise Mortel Mitchell and Renee Mortel Joy (Kenneth), son Ronald Mortel (La-Ong Ferguson) and daughter Michele Hall (Darryl) from a previous marriage; seven grandchildren, Brenda and Trevor Hall, Jonathan, Kayla and Alyssa Mitchell, Alexis and Brooklyn Joy; sister, Dinah Jacques; and a host of extended family members and close friends. A vigil prayer service will begin at 5:00pm on Sunday, May 1st immediately followed by a time of visitation until 7:00pm, in the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 359 West Areba Ave., Hershey. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am on Monday, May 2nd at the church. Interment will follow in the Hershey Cemetery. The mass will be livestreamed at: www.stjoanhershey.org. RICHARD “LARRY” WRIGHT
Larry Wright, 89, of Hummelstown, peacefully passed away at home on Sunday, April 17th with his family by his side. He was born on December 23, 1932 in Grover, Colorado, a son of the late Thomas and Ellen Wright. He attended school in Greeley, Colorado and enlisted in the US Navy in April 1950 and began his 24 year Naval Career. He did two tours to Korea aboard the USS Mount McKinley and two tours to Vietnam aboard the USS St Paul. He also received numerous medals. Upon retiring he and the family moved to Hummelstown. Larry began working for the US Post Office soon after, where he worked for 27 years. There he was an LSM Operator, Director of Clerk Craft, and also a Union Steward. Larry met his wife, Catharine “Kitty” (Hoke) Wright, at Corpus Christi NAS, where they were married. They celebrated their 67 Wedding Anniversary in November 2021. Larry enjoyed working with flowers in his yard, singing karaoke and, in his final days, enjoyed watching the birds outside his window. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his 10 children, Thomas, Michael (Pam), Theresa (Greg) Dawson, Richard, Timothy, Sheila, Andrew (Stephanie), Christopher (Rosanna), Steven, and Matthew (Crystal). He also has 14 Grandchildren and 21 Great Grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a baby daughter, grandson (David Wright), a granddaughter, four brothers, three sisters, and best friend Bill Dorosky. He was a member of St Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Shellsville VFW, Jonestown American Legion, APWU, and CMCA. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Noon on Thursday, April 28th in the St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, 359 West Areba Avenue in Hershey. Interment with military honors will be at 2:00pm at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Frederick Raymond Sontheimer, Jr, 75, of Hummelstown, PA, passed away on March 9, 2022 in the Hershey Medical Center surrounded by his family. Fred was born on July 1, 1946 in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of Frederick and Geraldine (Brew) Sontheimer who have preceded him in death.
He was a 1964 graduate of Bishop Canevin High School. After graduation, he attended Point Park College before enlisting in the US Navy where he proudly served six years in the submarine service aboard the fleet ballistic missile submarine USS Ethan Allen (SSBN 608). He continued that commitment as an active member of the US Submarine Veterans (USSVI) Keystone Base. He retired from Edwin L. Heim Co. as Vice President of the Electric Motor and Controls Division after 30 years of employment. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and traveling. Above all, he was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a good friend and neighbor. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda (Hirschfield), daughter Meghan (Sontheimer) Khanna, son Jason (Victoria), his grandchildren Dillon Frederick Khanna, Casey Francis Khanna, Charlotte Grace Khanna, Isabelle Sydney Sontheimer, Liam Frederick Sontheimer, and Samuel Finn Khanna, his sisters Barbara Sciarrino (Joseph), Geraldine Jensen (Christopher), Celeste O' Conner (Robert), his brother George Sontheimer and his nephews Jeffrey Sciarrino (Rhea) and James Kostka, Jr (Jocee). Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM on Sunday, March 20, 2022 at the Hoover Funeral Home located at 88 Lucy Avenue in Hershey, PA. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 21, 2022 at 11:00 AM in St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church at 359 West Areba Avenue in Hershey PA. Interment with military honors will be on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of the Hershey Medical Center, especially the nurses, who compassionately cared for Fred and his family. Mary Beth Marschik, 64, of Hummelstown, passed away Monday, February 14, 2022, at her residence.
Born in Pittsburgh, on June 5, 1957, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Flora Tiberio Marschik. Mary Beth retired from the Pennsylvania Judicial Center where she worked for the Judicial Security Administration. She was also former Adjunct Professor at Central Penn College in the Division of Law & Science. Mary Beth was a 1975 graduate of Franklin Regional Senior High School; graduated from Grove City College; and earned her Master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Strong in her faith, Mary Beth was a member of St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, Hershey. She loved history, especially Gettysburg, and enjoyed traveling. Flamboyant and bigger than life, Mary Beth had a heart of gold and was loved by everyone who knew her. Mary Beth is survived by her brother, John L. Marschik of Murrysville. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, March 19, 2022, at 11 AM in St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, 359 West Areba Avenue, Hershey. Visitation will be in the church Saturday from 10 AM until time of the service. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at 11 AM in the Good Shepherd Cemetery, 733 Patton Street, Monroeville. Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, is handling the arrangements. Madeleine Pellegrini Thomas passed away peacefully at 80 years old at home surrounded by the love of her husband G. Terry Thomas.
Madeleine is survived by her husband, siblings, her four children, Mark Thomas, Gary Thomas, Brian Thomas, Lynn Thomas-Brooks, and five grandchildren. Madeleine was raised by nuns in an Italian, Catholic home called Dante. Madeleine worked for the Navy off and on for 20 years. Her biggest passion was being a “stay-at-home-mom.” Madeleine was an exceptional wife and mother. She cared deeply for her family and also helping the underprivileged and children. She did this not out of obligation, rather because this is who she was. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to sponsor a Catholic education for a student at Saint Joan of Arc School in Hershey to continue Madeleine’s legacy. |
